Food additive E171 (titanium dioxide, TiO2)- first findings of oral exposure in rats

The experiments carried out by INRA scientists in collaboration with ANSES, the CEA-Grenoble-Alpes University, the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology and SOLEIL (DIFFABS beamline), show that TiO2 crosses the gut barrier and is found in the body. When ingested daily, TiO2 causes imbalances in the immune response and initiates and promotes pre-cancerous lesions in animals.

Those results were published in the 20 January 2017 issue of Scientific Reports.
