Considering that the site of SOLEIL is not accessible to the younger generation, the International Year of Light was the perfect opportunity for us to be in direct contact with this public, thanks to the presence of our relay teacher, put at the disposal of SOLEIL.
The “Primary Lights” project was thus developed through a partnership between the SOLEIL Synchrotron and the Direction des Services de l’Education Nationale of Yvelines. It aims at offering to primary school (from 8 to 11 years-old) teachers the necessary material to the teaching of science, based on scientific approach through light, shadow and color.
On the 13th of May 2015, 11-year-old pupils from the Bois de la Garenne School in Voisins-le-Bretonneux (Corinne Giardi’s class) had the chance to experiment on light and colors with spectroscopes and color filters in a playful manner and with total autonomy.
The pupils had already worked on colors used in paintings and printing, on the lights emitted by computer screens, or even the stage light (synthesis of different colors).
This project will be extended to a dozen classes of the Yvelines department throughout the 2015-2016 year. It is meant to be extended to other departments, from which Essonne, in the following years.
