Alexis Gamelin, recipient of the Jean-Louis Laclare Award

On Tuesday, October 15th, the Jean-Louis Laclare Award* of the Société Française de Physique (SFP) was presented to Alexis Gamelin, a physicist in the Accelerator Physics Group at SOLEIL, during the "Rencontres Accélérateurs" held at IJCLab on the Orsay Faculty campus (Université Paris-Saclay). With this prize, the jury has rewarded Alexis Gamelin's ability to interpret each of his results and to solve complex physics problems with inventiveness and maturity.

Alexis Gamelin joined the Accelerator Physics Group at SOLEIL in 2018, immediately after completing his PhD on collective effects as part of the ThomX project. During his thesis, Alexis addressed various aspects of accelerator physics, mainly from a theoretical perspective. Since then, Alexis has been involved in several projects, particularly as part of SOLEIL II:

  • Study and control of collective effects in electron beams (impedance, coherent instabilities, intrabeam scattering, and Touschek lifetime), especially for the future SOLEIL II ring. Specifically, he studied the efficiency of electron bunch lengthening using harmonic cavities.
  • Participation in the tuning and improvement of the bunch-by-bunch feedback system, as well as in optimizing accelerator parameters to meet the requirements of SOLEIL's beamline users for different operational modes.
  • Contribution to software development for SOLEIL II, including the creation of digital twins of the future accelerators.

Congratulations to Alexis!

* Created in 1998 by the Accelerator Division of the French Physical Society (SFP), this award recognizes a physicist for outstanding work in particle accelerator physics. Since 2003, it has been known as the "Jean-Louis Laclare Award," in honor of Jean-Louis Laclare, who played a key role in promoting this specialty within the SFP and had an exceptional scientific career, earning the Esclangon Prize from the French Physical Society in 1983 and the Knight of the National Order of Merit in 2001. Jean-Louis Laclare also directed the SOLEIL's Conceptual Design Report in the late 1990's.
