Construction of next generation synchrotrons and upgrade on the 3rd generation light sources has been started at various places, with the operation of several such facilities that recently began. The operation of these new light sources will show better beam quality, among which an improved brilliance, while keeping an equal number of photons. In this talk, I will focus on some foreseen benefits of the newly obtained x-ray beams for the users, and will specifically focus on optical laser pump / x-ray probe experiments.
