“Energies et Synergies:
Debating the role of the Higher Education System in the career advancement of scientific researchers”

This joint proposal between UNESCO and the synchrotron SOLEIL intends to reframe the debate around higher education systems and the role of independent research organizations in developing technical skills and providing career incentives for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) researchers. If Universities have been historically acknowledged as temples of culture and scientific production, independent research institutes and organizations, are still building and defining their public role in collective imagination. Indeed, this event aims also to give voice to early career researchers, in order to understand which are their ambitions, claims and needs in their scientific career paths.

This one-day event is being organised in cooperation with the Higher Education Section of the Education Sector of UNESCO. It will take place at SOLEIL on July 7th, 2017, involving several early career researchers and students with multi and inter-disciplinary scientific backgrounds.

Issues to discuss:

The emerging role of independent or semi-dependent research institutes with different status reflects not only the current status of national oriented research, particularly in Europe, but also the evolution of the high end or big-data research, through the convergence of the private and public sectors in one space.

Key stakeholders:
In order to create a synergy among the different actors taking part in the Science and Education scenario, together with young researchers, members of UNESCO and European government representatives will be present, alongside representatives of the local (Paris Sud) scientific community and international partners such as CERN and the European Union Directorate General for Research.
