Responsible Detector Group

SOLEIL is the French national synchrotron facility, located on the Saclay Plateau near Paris. It is a multi-disciplinary instrument and research laboratory whose mission is to conduct research using synchrotron radiation, to develop cutting edge instrumentation on the beamlines, and to make these developments available to the scientific community. SOLEIL synchrotron, a unique tool for both academic research and industrial applications across a wide range of disciplines including physics, biology, chemistry etc., opened in 2008. It is used annually by thousands of researchers from France and abroad. SOLEIL is based on a synchrotron source that is state-of-the-art both in terms of brilliance and stability. This large-scale facility, a partner of the Université Paris Saclay, is a “publicly owned” private company, founded by the CNRS and the CEA.

This position is located within the Experiences division, in the Detector group, made up of 7 permanent people (including the group responsible) and a few non-permanent people (depending on the year). The Detector group responsible works under the responsibility of the scientific directors.

I.Missions

To maintain the competitiveness of the beamlines and prepare for future detection needs, he/she develops the best strategy to equip the installation with high-performance detectors. To do this, he/she proposes the associated R&D programs and establishes external collaborations (national and international), as needed, in one or more strategic areas for SOLEIL.

He/She proposes the budgets associated with the R&D programs and manages a budget for the Detector group laboratory, in discussion with the scientific directors and taking into account the strategic objectives of the Experiences division.

He/She maintains a technical survey on current developments in synchrotron radiation detection, and advises beamlines on detection systems and associated electronic devices.

He/She ensures strong interaction between the Detector group, beamline scientists, IT group and other support groups as required.

He/She ensures representation of the activities of his/her group at national and international level.

II.Experience required

The Detector group responsible coordinates the activity of the group for the realization of the needs of the beamlines and the experimental devices.

He/She contributes to the installation and operation of the detectors on the beamlines, in collaboration with the beamline scientists.

He/She maintains an activity in the research and development of detection systems, proposes R&D axes for the Detector group, and contributes to setting up the means for this activity, in the group at the service of the progress of the scientific program.

He/She participates in the definition of priorities and the choice of equipment and advises researchers in this field.

He/She follows technical and scientific developments in the field of detection and maintains regular contact with the detector managers of other Very Large Instruments and specialized laboratories, as well as with the sales departments of the main companies concerned.

He/She presents the work of the Detector group at national and international conferences.

III.Qualifications and experience

The candidate should hold a PhD (BAC+8) in physics and instrumentation or in a similar specialty, with a professional experience of at least 10 years after the PhD in detectors development and associated electronics.

Management and project management skills will be necessary to ensure both the animation and supervision of a team as well as the development and/or participation in detector R&D programs in the framework of European and/or international collaboration.

Proficiency in English and French is essential for this position.

IV.General conditions

This job opportunity concerns a permanent contract (CDI). Remuneration is based on the SOLEIL salary scale, and determined according to the professional background, qualifications and degrees.

This position is open to CNRS and CEA staff, or universities, or other officials in the context of detachment.
