Serial millisecond protein crystallography using synchrotron radiation: opportunities and challenges

Recent upgrades at synchrotron microfocus beamlines have enabled room-temperature serial millisecond crystallography (SMX) data collection from micron-sized protein crystals. This talk will outline the current possibilities with SMX with respect to X-ray flux, crystal size, serial sample delivery and data analysis. Recent SMX results from microcrystals (5–20 µm) of soluble and membrane proteins delivered in a high-viscosity jet at the Advanced Photon Source will be presented, and the potential for SMX at SOLEIL will be discussed.
