Applications of synchrotron high-energy x-ray diffraction in advanced materials research

Yang REN
(Department of Physics, City University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong SAR, China)

Mardi 13 juin 2023 – 16h00
Amphithéâtre SOLEIL

The availability of high-brilliance high-energy X-rays has significantly advanced the field of materials research, especially for in-situ/operando studies of advanced materials in real time and realistic conditions. In this talk, the advantage, uniqueness and importance of high-energy X-ray diffraction and its applications in structural characterization of a large variety of materials of both fundamental and technological interest will be introduced. Some examples on rechargeable batteries, transforming metals and alloys, industrial critical components, additive manufacturing etc. will be presented. Challenges and future perspectives of high-energy X-ray techniques will be discussed.
Yang Ren is Chair Professor and Head of Department of Physics, City University of Hong Kong. Previously he was a Senior Physicist at Argonne National Laboratory in USA. He was a lead beam line scientist for a high-energy x-ray beamline at the Advanced Photon Source from 2001 to 2021. He received his M.S. in condensed matter physics from the Institute of Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and his Ph.D. in chemical physics from the University of Groningen, The Netherlands. His research interests focus on the structure-property relationship studies of materials by utilizing synchrotron X-ray and neutron scattering and other techniques.  His research activities include investigations of phase transition, correlated electron systems, engineering materials, nanoparticles and nanocomposites, energy storage (battery) and conversion materials. He has more than 900 scientific publications, and is listed in 2022 Clarivate Highly Cited Researchers.
