Challenges for soft X-ray diffraction grating-based instrumentation at European XFEL

The European XFEL is an X-ray free-electron laser facility which operates two hard X-ray and one soft X-ray branches. The soft X-ray branch of the European XFEL is equipped with the grating monochromator to allow a variety of spectroscopic techniques, such as XAS, XMCD, RIXS, photoelectron spectroscopy, etc., in various sample environments. The beam transport of FEL pulses through the monochromator is challenged by ultimate peak power, a goal to preserve coherent properties and a goal to preserve femtosecond pulse duration along with optimized photon energy resolution. The aim to minimize time-bandwidth product results in demand for the ultimate quality of the optical elements, in particular variable line spacing (VLS) grating. I will discuss the approach to design and operation of diffraction grating-based instrumentation at European XFEL, including the monochromator and RIXS spectrometer.
