From the Origins of Life to Oxygen-Based Medicine: Learning from Evolution

Life emerged on Earth more than 3.5 billion years ago in an environment almost devoid of oxygen. The rise of oxygenic photosynthesis profoundly transformed our planet, driving evolution to develop mechanisms to tolerate, transport and exploit this highly reactive molecule. Among these innovations, hemoglobins played a key role in the emergence of complex life. Marine organisms evolved particularly remarkable adaptations to fluctuating oxygen conditions. Our research on the lugworm Arenicola marina, which was a first invertebrate to live the ocean to colonize the earth there is 450 million years ago,

led to the discovery of a giant extracellular hemoglobin with exceptional oxygen-transport properties rediscover with high resolution on Soleil platform. We have translated this ancient evolutionary innovation into new oxygen-based technologies for organ preservation, tissue healing and human medicine. This lecture will take you on a journey from the origins of life on Earth to the operating room, following the extraordinary story of an oxygen-carrying molecule inherited from a marine worm.
