EcatalytiX

03-05 April 2024 ECPM, Strasbourg, Alsace, France

Invited speakers

Emiliana Fabbri, Paul Scherrer Institute, Villingen, Switzerland

The academic carrier of Emiliana has driven her throughout the Globe, from the University of Rome Tor Vergata, to the University of Florida, the National Institute for Material Sciences in Japan and, finally, PSI. Since her arrival at PSI in 2012, she has been developing her expertise, not only on the synthesis of materials for energy storage and conversion, but also on analysis tools required to understand them, such as operando X-ray photoelectron and absorption spectroscopy coupled to electrochemistry. She recently received a SNSF PRIMA grant on this topic, specifically on materials design for water electrolysis and the associated advanced characterization methods and new design principles. She is also one of the group leaders within the NCCR MARVEL centre that aims to accelerate the design and discovery of novel materials. From January 2024, she is co-group leader of the Electrocatalysis and Interfaces group of the Electrochemistry Laboratory at PSI.

Marie-Ingrid Richard, Center for Atomic and Alternative Energies, France

Marie-Ingrid’s professional dream is to look at the crystallographic properties of single nanoparticles under operando conditions, a goal which is closely intertwined with synchrotron methods and the development of their optics and brilliance. The recent upgrade of the ESRF synchrotron brought this dream one step closer to fruition, and, through her long-lasting collaboration with the ID01 beamline at ESRF and her recent ERC consolidator grant (CARINE), she is now able to contemplate the detailed crystallographic behaviour of single nanostructures (e.g. < 200 nm single platinum nanoparticles) under different operating conditions. At the same time, with her team, she is developing tools to facilitate data analysis and combine her operando measurements with simulations and, altogether, build a complete picture of how nanostructured systems behave during catalysis.

Andrea Zitolo, Synchrotron SOLEIL, Saint-Aubin, France

Andrea graduated from the Sapienza University of Rome, starting from his early carrier to use synchrotron-based techniques such as X-ray absorption spectroscopy in the field of coordination chemistry. His professional journey led him to France, where he is currently working as a beamline scientist at the Synchrotron SOLEIL. His most notable contributions to the field are found within the understanding of the structural and electronic properties of complex materials (such as metal-nitrogen-doped carbon catalysts) for energy applications by operando X-ray absorption spectroscopy with the help of theoretical modelling approaches. Within the SPECTROSCOPE ANR project that he coordinates since 2020, Andrea aims to move operando analysis toward the assessment of more realistic interfaces, designing fuels cells and electrolyzers compatible with X-ray based spectroscopies.

See Wee Chee, Fritz-Haber Institute of the Max Planck Society, Berlin, Germany

The expertise of See Wee lies in what is often considered as one of the most challenging operando techniques, i.e., transmission electron microscopy combined with electrochemistry, that he uses to track the dynamics at the nanoscale of electrocatalysts for energy applications. His work is not limited to understanding electrocatalytic systems through operando characterization with electron microscopy, but also in the development of tools to facilitate data analysis (e.g., automated image processing, analysis of low electron-dose, poor signal-to-noise images, etc.) and its combination with other analytical methods (such as X-ray microscopy). See Wee held research positions in universities in the US (University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, Arizona State University, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute) and Singapore (National University of Singapore), and in industrial companies (Hummingbird Scientific, USA) before taking up his current position at the FHI-MPG.
