Magnetism Engineer

SOLEIL is the French national synchrotron radiation center, located on the Saclay plateau near Paris. As a unique tool for academic research and industrial applications, SOLEIL is used every year by several thousand French and foreign researchers. This TGIR, “Très Grande Infrastructure de Recherche (Very Large Research Infrastructure)”, a partner of the University of Paris-Saclay, is constituted as a “civil” company founded jointly by the CNRS and the CEA.

Context and missions

To remain competitive in today's fast-paced international environment, and to develop scientific and technological solutions that meet society's major challenges, SOLEIL is embarking on a major upgrade of its accelerators and beamlines, called SOLEIL II.

The ring will be equipped with more than a thousand new magnets, some of which will be made up of permanent magnets. The magnetism engineer will work within the Magnetism and Insertions group, responsible for accelerator magnets (linac, booster, transfer line, storage ring) and insertion devices (undulator or wiggler). His/her missions will be multiple:

I.1- Design, modelling of electromagnetic and permanent magnet accelerator magnets, manufacturing monitoring, measurements (magnetic characterization, comparison of measurements to the magnetic model and metrology) and adjustments. As part of SOLEIL II, he/she will be responsible for supervising the production and measurements of one or more types of magnets which will be used to replace the magnets in the current storage ring.

I.2- Design, construction, measurements and optimization of undulators of various types (permanent magnet undulators with variable polarization, cryogenic planar undulators, etc.). As part of SOLEIL II, he/she will be in charge of the construction of the adjustable phase undulator with a period of 25 cm (APU 250) and a length of 5 m, in conjunction with the group engineer currently in charge of the project.

I.3- Development of high-performance measurement instrumentation around the various magnetic characterization benches in place (Helmholtz coil, magnetometer, Hall probe, stretched wire, vibrating wire, pulsed). Preparation of measurement benches for SOLEIL magnets or adaptation of the bench for the APU250 undulator.

I.4 - Participation in maintenance, repair, proper operation and interventions on magnetic equipment in operation on accelerators for which the group is responsible.  He/she will ensure on-call duties intended to minimize their downtime. He/she will participate in the maintenance and development of the laboratory's measuring devices. He/she will carry out machine sessions dedicated to the operation of the magnets (commissioning) or insertion devices (effect on the beam, first observation of the radiation with the beamline, characterization of the radiation produced and comparison with the calculated radiation from magnetic measurements or the ideal undulator).

The present employment is open to candidates with an engineering degree or a PhD.

The candidate must be experienced in the fields of magnetism and electromagnetic radiation (synchrotron radiation in particular).

The candidate must be able to work in a team, both at the group level or at SOLEIL partner teams (mechanical engineering, vacuum instrumentation, alignment, beam dynamics, beamlines, etc.). He/she will have to interact constructively with physicists, engineers, designers and technicians.

Working Conditions

If you are seeking a position in a company renowned for its scientific excellence and technological innovation, SOLEIL offers you the chance to:

  • Join an innovative, multidisciplinary, and multicultural research laboratory at the heart of the Paris-Saclay research and development ecosystem.
  • Collaborate with national and international experts in various scientific and technical fields.
  • Benefit from the proximity of Paris, just 25 km away, to discover its cultural wealth and dynamic lifestyle.
  • Enjoy short trips within France and Europe.

Employment Conditions

This position requires participation in the operation and continuous running of the facility in the form of on-call duty and duty period. These services of on-call duty may represent up to approximately 15% of the total working time.

Advantages :

  • Take advantage of the proximity of Paris, just 25 km away, to discover its cultural wealth and dynamic lifestyle.
  • 26 days' paid vacation + up to 2 days' fractional leave + 23 days' RTT per full working year, and for a 40-hour working week.
  • Compulsory supplementary health insurance (basic plan) costs 17.66 euros per month for the employee (cost of 158.92 euros for the employer, corresponding to 90% of the contribution), including membership for household members (life partner + children).
  • We offer an optional top-up of 24.34 euros for your household (life partner + children).
