Data Engineer

SOLEIL is the French national synchrotron facility, located on the Saclay Plateau near Paris. It is a multi-disciplinary instrument and research laboratory whose mission is to conduct research using synchrotron radiation, to develop cutting edge instrumentation on the beamlines, and to make these developments available to the scientific community. SOLEIL synchrotron, a unique tool for both academic research and industrial applications across a wide range of disciplines including physics, biology, chemistry etc., opened in 2008. It is used annually by thousands of researchers from France and abroad. SOLEIL is based on a synchrotron source that is state-of-the-art both in terms of brilliance and stability. This large scale facility, a partner of the Université Paris Saclay, is a “publicly owned” private company, founded by the CNRS and the CEA.

The team ISAC "Acquisition and Control Systems Engineering " comprises between 20 and 25 permanents persons. The Data Engineer will work under the supervision of the ISAC team leader.

The Acquisition- and Control Systems- Engineering team (ISAC group) is in charge of the control- and acquisition- service architecture in SOLEIL that interconnects physical and virtual systems.  Our approach is to apply both proven and new solutions & technologies.

Team objectives are to gather insightful technical and scientific data. The team contributes to data acquisition, data transport up to data processing.

The team offers services on the whole engineering cycle:

Specification, Support/Advice, development/deployment and MRO (Maintenance, repair and operations) on the Control-acquisition infrastructure and services provided for accelerators, beamlines systems and others SOLEIL’s infrastructure. The team builds solutions based on industry standards or standards from our scientific ecosystem.

This work is done closely with technical and scientific users as well as collaborations with academic, scientific or industrials partners.

In an operational environment, the mains duties are described below:

  • Designing efficient models to manage Data flows ;
  • Collecting requirements from accelerator and beamlines and then specify and design architectures ;
  • Implementing complex data flow including acquisition and data transformation ;
  • Contributing to the TANGO and Kafka platforms which allow to build smart data models to automate operational data processing and provide tools for scientific teams ;
  • Contributing to the development and integration of Artificial Intelligence tools ;
  • Working on the reliability of the tools and data delivered ;
  • Developing tools and platforms for predictive maintenance ;
  • Contribute to R&D about data management ;
  • Work must be done in line with the SOLEIL strategy and in collaboration with others SOLEIL computing teams.
