SOLEIL’s activities in radiotherapy should be principally based around radiobiology, complementing the activities conducted at the European synchrotron facility in Grenoble (ESRF) around new radiotherapy techniques, activated phototherapy and use of microbeams.

Radiotherapy via photoactivation

This consists of increasing the excitation of target elements (I, cis-Pt) by directing the energy of X-ray beams around their absorption threshold.  These elements will return to the fundamental state after having re-emitted photons and particles that contribute to the destruction of malignant cells.  Spectacular results have already been obtained with glial tumors in rats.

Microbeam radiotherapy (M.R.T.)

This is a technique of irradiation by a large number of very intense microbeams.  It seems to be much less traumatic for surrounding healthy tissues than treatment with a uniform beam, thus facilitating the reconstruction of irradiated healthy tissue.
