Today, SOLEIL is the best machine in the world in its energy sector (from infrared to X-rays); thanks to its design and equipment, as well as its compactness, which allows it to save more than 40% of its circumference for insertions, it boasts perfect beam stability and brilliance that also allow it to hold its own against the largest optimized hard X-ray synchrotrons. For proof of this, visit these pages, which were designed especially for you.

The storage ring characteristics

The characteristics of the storage ring partly determine the performance of the entire facility.  The SOLEIL ring is extremely compact; however, it contains a very large part of the highest-performing light sources.  It was also designed to meet the needs of all types of users, as much by the choice of the machine’s nominal operating energy as by the two possible types of operation.

Accelerators

The SOLEIL machine is made up 2 accelerators (the LINAC linear accelerator and the circular booster accelerator) and a storage ring, a polygon with a 354 meter perimeter.  It contains magnetic components (dipole and wave) that curve the trajectory of electrons.  At each curve, the electrons lose energy in the form of synchrotron light.

Insertions devices

Third-generation synchrotrons such as SOLEIL use magnetic parts called “waves” that are inserted throughout the perimeter of the storage ring.  These are permanent groups of coils or magnets juxtaposed along the length of two “jaws” that cause the electrons to oscillate.  At each wave, packets of electrons emit a fine stroke of consistent light.
