After the success of the 2004 edition of the SOLEIL training school on the synchrotron analysis of ancient materials, which was oversubscribed by a factor of 3 (87 applications from all over the world), New Lights for ancient materials 2007 will be held at SOLEIL in March 2007. Indeed, a wide interest has recently been demonstrated by the community working on ancient materials (museum institutions, university archaeology departments and natural science departments) for the advanced spectroscopy techniques provided at synchrotron facilities.
The new edition of the school aims at prolonging this fruitful interaction on topics relevant to long-term aging, alteration and conservation. New opportunities offered by synchrotron techniques will be exemplified through the in-depth study of:

  • ageing, corrosion and alteration processes
  • consolidation treatments
  • diagnosis and preventive conservation
A special focus will be given to inorganic materials, primarily stone, glass and metal. However, both organic and inorganic materials can be studied at synchrotron facilities.

Courses will include lectures presenting the current challenges regarding the conservation of these materials, exemples of application of synchrotron techniques in the field and in-depth presentation of synchrotron techniques. Tutorials, experiments at SOLEIL beamlines (SOLEIL operation permitting), will aim at combining the various approaches. A detailed visit of the synchrotron will be organised.

Venue

The new French synchrotron facility SOLEIL near Paris will start operations in 2006 and open to users early 2007.
It is located at Saint-Aubin, on the Plateau de Saclay, 20km south-west of Paris.

The New lights on ancient materials training school is targeted at conservation scientists, and more generally to scientists studying or having an interest in the diagnosis, preservation, stabilisation, conservation and restoration of art objects and monuments, who wish to know more about the capabilities of synchrotron techniques for these areas.
The course will ideally be suited to young professionals, including post-docs and PhD students. A good background in humanities and prior basic knowledge about diffraction, tomography and/or spectroscopy using infrared, UV or X-ray radiations would be appreciated.

All courses will be taught in English.

Reasonably-priced accommodation will be provided in the neighbourhood. Participants living at more than 100 km will be allowed to apply to a grant (lump sum: 600EUR) for partial reimbursement of travel costs and living expenditures.

Programme (preliminary)
The programme will be sub-divided into five main topics taught by world-class specialists in the field:
  • a "General introduction" on synchrotron techniques
  • "Ageing corrosion, alteration"
  • "Conservation and restoration"
  • an in-depth review of "Synchrotron methods" useful for conservation purposes
  • "Conclusions"

The training course will include lectures as well as tutorials. We consider opening access to some beamlines available (imaging, diffraction and absorption) to work on datasets acquired on samples brought by some of the participants during the training period.
