1-2 March 2006, SOLEIL synchrotron Kick-off meeting of the sub-Working Groups: Bridging Archeometry and Conservation & New Diagnostic Tools for Metal Artefacts
In December 2005 the Metal Working Group of ICOM-CC has published its programme for the next triennial period (2005-2008). Five research themes will be supported during this period and two of them will be discussed further during this meeting: Where archaeometry and conservation meet and Innovative investigation of metal artefacts. Two sub-Working Groups have been setup to initiative some activities within these research themes: Bridging Archeometry and Conservation (BAC) and New Diagnostic Tools for Metal Artefacts (NDTMA, among which synchrotron radiation).
The objectives of the meeting are:
to discuss activities that could be developed under BAC and NDTMA
to identify the teams that are willing or/and are able to contribute
to list some projects of interest under BAC and NDTMA
for BAC: to define a strategy favouring the collaboration between archaeometers and conservation professionals
for NDTMA: to discuss on the possibilities offered by synchrotrons (SOLEIL), accelerators (AGLAE) and other innovative tools...
After a general introduction on ICOM-CC and the Metal WG, the participants will be introduced to the activities of two Research Networks (GdR): ChimArt and SOLEIL & Heritage that are already active in the field. Following these presentations the possibilities offered by the AGLAE accelerator and the future SOLEIL synchrotron for the diagnostic of metal artefacts will be presented.
A large space will be left for discussions to encourage the exchange of ideas between the participants. The participants that are willing to present briefly their activities are invited to do so. Meetings of the sub-WGs in small comities are planned on the second day and the sessions should be run in parallel (depending on the number of participants and their motivation).
The new French synchrotron facility SOLEIL near Paris will start operations in 2006. It is located at Saint-Aubin, on the Plateau de Saclay, 20km south-west of Paris and develops a liaison office dedicated to the support of heritage research. The meeting will be held in the meeting room of the "Pavillon d'accueil". Important: The meeting takes place at the entrance of the site and does not require to pass security checks. However, please note that an identity card is requested to visit the synchrotron installations.
