EXP-021

The SOLEIL synchrotron both laboratory research and scientific tool of very high level, has a dual mission: to provide all of the French scientific community and international experimental facilities the best in the world and develop scientific research.

Beamline Scientist (m/f)

The SWING beamline, using radiation from an in-vacuum U20 undulator installed in a short straight section, is dedicated to Small Angle X-ray Scattering (SAXS) in the energy range 5-16 keV. The main addressed scientific fields are Soft Condensed Matter and Biology. The beamline offers a large variety of dedicated sample environments (Rheometer, Heating stage, Stopped-Flow mixer, several motorized stages), and a high reactivity towards unusual user requests. The optics was designed to allow automated measurements ranging from Qmin=1.5E-2 nm-1 to Qmax=10 nm-1 in a single session, a feature particularly adapted to data collection from very large macromolecular complexes or colloids. In the field of macromolecular solution structure determination, the innovative combination of Size-Exclusion Chromatography and SAXS ensures sample monodispersity by automatic separation of aggregates. A new fast detector, based on hybrid pixel technology, will be available in 2012 to follow reaction kinetics with millisecond frame rating.

Missions

We are seeking a scientist with a strong background in structural biology and experience in protein and/or nucleic acid modeling. Candidates should master relevant bioinformatics tools, have skills in programming and also display a strong interest in instrumentation and data analysis. Experience in SAXS is an asset.

You will contribute to ensure the operation of the beamline, including the activity of local contact to external users. You will be part of a very active team of scientists with ample opportunities to conduct collaborative research on challenging projects in structural biology.

Qualifications and Expertises

You should hold a Ph.D. or equivalent plus post-doctoral experience in structural biology. Having experience both in macromolecular modeling and data collection and analysis will be a strong asset.

Complementary ability: the candidate should be fluent in English (written and spoken). Practice of French is also desirable.

General conditions

This offer corresponds to a permanent position. The remuneration will be based on the SOLEIL salary scale, and determined according to the professional background, qualifications and degrees held by the candidate.

The place of work will be at Synchrotron SOLEIL, which is located in the Paris suburbs (Saint-Aubin - Essonne).

The application must contain a cover letter, resume and three letters of recommendation. Applications should be filed directly at:
