Beamline Scientist PSICH beamline (M/F) Experiments Division
Deadline for submission of applications: Position opening in :

EXP-110

SOLEIL is an optimized 2.75 GeV synchrotron light source of 3rd generation under construction in the south of Paris. The first 12 beamlines, several of which using new concepts of undulator sources, are planned to be opened to external users in 2009. A total of 26 beamlines covering the whole energy range from IR to hard X-rays and providing a complete panel of synchrotron radiation-based outstanding experimental tools for Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Earth and Environmental Sciences, will be operational in 2013. A permanent staff of 350 people in the Experiments, Source and Accelerators Divisions, Technical and Computer Support Services and Administration will operate the installation for users and in-house research.

Beamline Scientist (m/f)

The beamline, located on a short straight section, will be partly devoted to high energy (25-50 keV) X-ray diffraction for extreme conditions (Pressure and/or Temperature) and partly to micro-tomography (15-50 keV). The source will be an in-vacuum wiggler. White beam and monochromatic beam will be available. The diffraction will be performed both in energy dispersive (white beam) and angular dispersive mode on the 10-100µm scale. For the angular dispersive diffraction, detection will be made by 2D detectors (Image plate and ccd).

The beamline will be opened for users in 2011.

The tomography will be done with the absorption contrast technique using full field image. The maximum size of the x-ray spot will be 15 mm horizontally and 4.5 mm vertically.

The microtomography set-up will be dedicated to the three-dimensional morphological analysis at the micrometer scale (1-10 µm) of diverse heterogeneous materials like cements and concretes, rocks, biological samples, cultural heritage pieces, microfluidics systems etc.

The microtomography facility on PSICHÉ is a part of a general program that includes a low energy (5-25 keV) long beamline dedicated to high resolution phase contrast tomography on soft materials and a high energy (30-60 keV) phase contrast tomography beamline.

Missions

We are looking for a scientist (m/w) who will be fully responsible for the microtomography set-up, during the construction period as well as afterwards during operation.

He (she) will be assigned to the beamline as a second scientist under the authority of the beamline responsible, and will be involved in both its scientific and technical aspects.

He (she) will actively participate in the user-support programme as well as in the beamline construction and development.

He (she) will develop his (her) own research programme, taking advantage of the specific tools implemented on it, both in the course of the in-house research activities and through collaborations that he (she) will stimulate in the scientific community.

He (she) will have the possibility to extend his (her) activity to the other facilities of the tomography program of SOLEIL.

Qualifications and Expertises

You should hold a Ph.D. or equivalent in Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Earth sciences. A strong knowledge and technical experience in the microtomography field (including knowledge of data processing) together with research experience in material science are required, with a minimum of three years of experience. The construction of a micro-tomography set-up and its development requires a strong interest for instrumentation. An experience in synchrotron radiation experiments is mandatory.

Complementary ability:
the candidate must be fluent in English (written and spoken).
Practice of French is also highly desirable.

General conditions

This offer corresponds to a post in indefinite duration. The remuneration will be based on the SOLEIL salary scale, and determined according to the professional background, qualifications and degrees held by the candidate.

The place of work will be at Synchrotron SOLEIL, which is located in the Paris suburbs (Saint-Aubin).

Applications should include a motivation letter and Curriculum Vitae with the addresses of three referees. Applications should be preferably registered directly on the SOLEIL internet site.
