SOLEIL beamlines for medicine

Industry & development Contents > Medicine > SOLEIL beamlines for medicine

SOLEIL does not yet have an entirely biomedical line as some synchrotrons do. However, among the twenty-four lines planned, eight are or will be deeply involved in medical research and medicine. In addition, an initiative led from within the MELUSYN group will undoubtedly add to the proposals for new lines, since there are still nineteen light output points to be equipped.

The lines SOLEIL is planning to dedicate to medicine concern cellular and tissue analysis only, in all energy ranges. They are:

  • SMIS, for infrared spectroscopy and the cartography of biochemical components (opening in 2007),

  • DISCO, for UV spectroscopy (dichroism, imagery of fluorescence decline, specific excitation coupled with mass spectroscopy); (opening in 2009),

  • SAMBA for X-fluorescence and EXAFS spectroscopy in the field of X-rays (particular adapted to the study of metals); (opening in 2007),

  • LUCIA, for X-fluorescence and XANES spectroscopy in cartography mode in the field of soft X-rays (particularly adapted for light elements); (open and lodged at the SLS in Switzerland at the moment),

  • The micro-TOMOGRAPHIE line, for tomography with resolution of 1 μm or less (opening in 2009),

  • PLEIADES, for atomic and molecular spectroscopy, with applications in radiobiology (opening in 2007),

  • NANOSCOPIUM, for micro-diffraction, X micro-fluorescence, and micro-XANES in the field of X-rays and scanning imagery mode with resolution of 1 μm (opening in 2010),

  • The soft-X MICROSCOPIE line, for full-field X-microscopy in tomographic mode, with spatial resolution of 20 nm (opening in 2010).
