Pressure perturbation is a powerful approach to investigate structural and spectroscopic properties, conformational space and function of biomolecules. The conference will highlight interests and prospects of high pressure with emphasis on the molecular basis.
High-pressure studies include fundamental researches as well as biotechnological and societal applications. Therefore, scientists from different communities (in particular biophysics, biology, medicine, pharmacology) are invited to participate.
The interplay between experiments and simulations is another key point of this conference. A session will be devoted to simulations, with a small joint workshop for training.
For many years, confining samples in a high-pressure environment was often a discouraging constraint. Even if technical developments are still needed for e.g. x-ray absorption and circular dichroism, pressure measurements are now successfully combined with many investigation tools, including high-resolution structural methods:

- Nuclear magnetic resonance
- Macromolecular crystallography
- Neutron and X-ray scattering
- UV-Visible and infrared spectroscopies
- Other biophysical methods

Results obtained using state-of-the art high-pressure instrumentation and methods will be reported.

HPMB2008 will take place on December 10th-12th 2008 at the new third generation synchrotron radiation facility SOLEIL, located at Saint Aubin, near Saclay and Orsay, in the vicinity of Paris. By the end of 2008, at least 11 beamlines of SOLEIL will operate routinely, providing an exciting context for the conference.
The meeting is jointly organized by SOLEIL and two large biophysical laboratories, Centre de Biophysique Moléculaire (CBM, Orléans) and Institut de Biologie Structurale (IBS, Grenoble).
