This workshop will be the fourth in a series started in 2003 in Sigtuna (Sweden), followed by the one in Bad Honnef (Germany) in 2005, while the last one was held in Erice (Italy) in 2007. It will be held on a island of the South of France, at the Hotel Coralia Marina Viva, Porticcio, Corsica.

The initial scope of the master workshop was to define common interests to accelerate structuring the European research efforts in the field of free clusters spectroscopy, mainly using synchrotron radiation (SR). The size, name and scientific content of the following editions from the series have evolved in accordance to new and emerging research directions.
Indeed, the amazing progresses made in the recent years by the instrumentation in terms of spectral brightness of the X-ray sources (new SR facilities, X-ray Free Electron Lasers etc.), detection schemes (multi-channel analysis due to intensive use of position sensitive detectors, time-resolved techniques etc.) and production sources of clusters (pure and mixed, atomic and molecular clusters) and nanoparticles permit nowadays highly accurate spectroscopic studies of more and more complex objects.
Beyond the fundamental interest of such kind of spectroscopic studies which are of crucial importance for the understanding of the structure, dynamics and chemical reactivity of nano-objects as fundamental bricks of matter, they are also of major interest for tomorrow’s technological breakthroughs in a vast majority of fields as functionalized materials, environmental science, life science and medicine etc. Interesting problems like: collective electronic decay processes, role of size and composition of pure and functionalized nanoparticles on their decay dynamics following inner-shell excitation, element and site specific photochemical processes, chemical reactivity of nano-objects, X-ray based imaging techniques etc. may be addressed.

The four day workshop aims to gather a wide and diversified audience of researchers, mainly form the cluster and nanoparticle physics and chemistry fields, around several sessions consisting in invited and contributed oral presentations as well as a poster session. The 2nd announcement and Call for papers will be released around February 10, 2010.
