On Friday, 28 November 2008, SOLEIL welcomed the first class of students registered in the Nanomat International Master’s programme to the TEMPO beamline for practical workshops on the topic of photoemission. This Physics Master’s, organized on a partnership basis between Pierre and Marie Curie University (Paris 6) and Uppsala University (Sweden) provides training in the material and nano-sciences. It is open to students worldwide who have completed two years of higher education in physics. Incidentally, this first M2 Nanomat class is quite cosmopolitan, with students from Germany, Denmark, France, Iran, Italy, Latvia, Pakistan, Romania and Sweden. Classes alternate between Paris and Uppsala over the four M1/M2 semesters, while second year classes are taught in English, in Paris. With the objective of offering students advanced training at the cutting edge of the latest experimental research, a full day of practical workshops was organized on the TEMPO beamline under the direction of F. Sirotti. This practical workshop was organized in conjunction with the module entitled “Local/Non-local Spectroscopies” (NP-427) and in the context of a course taught by François Rochet (Professor at the Laboratory of Physical Chemistry, Matter and Radiation, UPMC). Its objective was to track the fluctuations of the photoemission spectrum of a silicon surface during oxidation. The measurements performed during the workshop highlighted the need for a high-intensity light source with adjustable wave length (and with extreme surface sensitivity), as well as all the advantages inherent in conducting experiments at synchrotron sites and the use of ultra-vacuum techniques.
