Numerous training initiatives and a thriving scientific culture centred on the study of ancient materials are taking shape at IPANEMA. In fact, the dissemination of research results to scientific communities, as well as to the general public, is an essential function of this new facility.

Networks and projects

SOLEIL is a member of several national, European and international research programmes in the field of archaeology and cultural heritage conservation, including:

PATRIMA
Its objective is to develop, on all the chaine of the knowledges and the know-how connected to the heritage, international programs of research and training by collecting human sciences and exact sciences within the Foundation of the sciences of the heritage. The sector of IPANEMA dedicated to the archaeology and to the preservation of the heritage is made in connection with PATRIMA. [web site]

CHARISMA
An FP7 integrated project which supports access by European users. [web site]

ARCUS Art rupestre
(Action in Regions for Academic and Scientific Cooperation) a rock art research initiative in the Ile-de-France region. [web site]

GDRI STARGDRI STAR
The Science, Technologies and Rock Art international research grouping (GDRI STAR) of the CNRS and the National Research Foundation. [web site]

ANR ARCOR
A project devoted to the study of multisecular corrosion of complex ferrous systems (mechanisms, modelling and forecasting): use of archaeological analogues.

Training activities

Since 2004, the SOLEIL Heritage Interface has been organising European training schools on a triennial basis – the New Lights on Ancient Materials cycle – devoted to synchrotron radiation applications for cultural heritage conservation and archaeology.

New Lights for ancient materials 2010
Advanced X-ray studies and related sample preparation
From 27 May to 2 June 2010, SOLEIL synchrotron is organising the third European Training School on the application of synchrotron radiation to ancient materials, in conjunction with the European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST) network.

Rock Art Materials Microanalysis
- Cederberg 2008
Advanced training school for rock art studies in Clanwilliam, South Africa, September 2008. Advanced training on the microanalysis of rock art materials organised by GDRI-STAR and the ARCUS Ile-de-France Rock art programme / South Africa, 28 September to 5 October 2008. [for further information]

New Lights on Ancient Materials 2007
Ageing, alteration & conservation
The second edition of the European training school (New Lights on Ancient Materials 2007), was held at SOLEIL, 12-17 March 2007. [for further information]

New Lights for ancient materials 2004
Synchrotron analysis of museum objects.
On 14-18 December 2004, SOLEIL synchrotron organised the first European Training School on the application of synchrotron radiation to cultural heritage materials (New Lights on Ancient Materials 2004), with the participation of the European COST network (Action G8). [for further information]

Scientific dissemination

Scientific articles incorporating the results of research conducted at IPANEMA are prepared for publication in both “hard”- and “soft”-science journals. The work groups that designed IPANEMA also emphasized the essential role the platform must play in the hosting of open access databases. IPANEMA host and organise scientific events of international scope (e.g. symposiums, special-interest workshops and seminars).

Dissemination to the general public

IPANEMA has the will to share, with various public, the results of its researches in the interface between the following disciplines: physics, chemistry, mathematical applied, sciences of materials and human sciences. For example, European Heritage Days were the opportunity in 2009 to open the synchrotron to thematic visits in association with the association ArkéoMédia.
The building of the platform will open on a simple but permanent space of exhibition which will present the works of the platform and the partner laboratories. This one will be accessible to the general public.
